What's the difference between a Credential vs. License?

Credential Program

A credential is an "educational process" of establishing the qualifications of professionals in Early Childhood programs.  The process consists of the attainment of a specific skill level and knowledge of regulations and the assessing of the candidate's educational background and experience. A credential is then awarded to the professional who meets the standards set for the content area.

The credential program is designed as a valid and reliable measure of a candidate's understanding of the core regulations related to a content area.  Candidates enrolled in the credential program acquire a skill set of the best practices and procedural methods for implementing, monitoring and managing regulations within a school environments.

The credential signifies that a student has enrolled, attended and successfully completed the requirements of a specific area within a school program.  In order to complete a credential program, all students must complete the Credential Core Requirements.

License Program

A license is a "collegiate diploma". It is a post-secondary academic process of establishing the qualifications of professionals in Early Childhood programs.  The process consists of the attainment of a specific skill level and knowledge of regulations and the assessing of the candidate's educational background and experience. A license is a permission granted by the University to engage in curriculum based college-level educational services.

A license is an advance degree-seeking certificate and can be used towards post-secondary degrees.  This process is inclusive of the credential process but provides a higher educational and skill level attainment by utilizing a prior learning assessment and collecting student fieldwork requirements students earn educational credits that are transferrable to 2 year or 4 years advance degrees. Students enrolled in this program will receive official University transcripts showing college credits earned. State, Federal and Local boards requirements have to be met in each content area.

The license program is an opportunity to earn professional recognition beyond post secondary education or help in the completion of a degree program. A license is the next progression in an employee's professional career.  Beyond the educational degree, a professional license denotes professional commitment and achievement and represents a "plus" feature of advance education,  knowledge and experience that meets or exceeds excellence at the national level. Professional workers agree to a critical review process that includes evaluation of the candidate's educational preparation, supervised fieldwork, Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) and written examination.

What's the benefits of being Credential or License?...

Our credential or license program is more than training.  It is an academic diploma and/or license which is "permission to practice" the implementation, design and monitoring policies and procedures. The process is regulated by the University in order to ensure accredited training and examination processes are upheld.

The programs lay out a course of attestation of qualification, competence and completion of the a program and the successful completion of exams which provides validation of each individual's possession of the knowledge, skills and ability necessary to improve program services.

Being a credentialed or licensed professional makes all the difference.  Professionals who want recognition for their professional achievement and who want to unlock new career paths come to HS University for their credentials or license.

Obtaining a credential is the next progression in a Head Start/Early Head Start professional career.  Beyond the educational degree, a professional credential or license denotes professional commitment and achievement and represents a "plus' feature of certifying knowledge and experience that meets or exceeds excellence in the Head Start profession at the national level. Professionals enrolled in our programs agree to a critical review process that includes (in order to develop a student transcript):

1. An evaluation of the candidates educational background

2. A review of work experience and on-the-job knowledge

3. Up to 480 clock hours of supervised fieldwork

4. A completion of Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)

5. A written "self-appraisal" that includes an updated autobiographical statement
